October 1956

October 1
Monday.  Ike took us to bus station.  Left nine A.M. arrived in Van Buren about six P.M.  Rather enjoyed the bus ride.  Paul met us & Minnie had dinner for us.
Returning home from their visit to Kansas City.  The Greyhound Bus had a fairly direct route from KC to Fort Smith.  Don and I rode up to buy a used car from Ike and drive it home.  Was a nice ride!

October 2
Tuesday.  Put in the morning unpacking and watering flowers and shrubs.  Took a car load of Group 1 to Alma.  They met with Florence Newman, Two P.M.
One of her Circle meetings at church.  Mammaw did not drive until after Kenney had his stroke and she wasn't the best, but she did have a car and lots of the little ladies in Van Buren did not.

October 3

Pauline - my granddad's youngest sister coming up from North Little Rock for a visit and her birthday party.

October 10
Wednesday.  Did some machine mending.  Took Nora grocery shopping.  Also took anniversary clock to Clifford Donahoo – Hope it runs this time.
Mending on her old treadle sewing machine...  That would be the mantel clock (sat on the piano in the houses that didn't have a mantel) that had to be wound every night and chimed every fifteen minutes.

October 11
Thursday.  Up at six o’clock to write letter to Jay.  Grandma & Kenney asleep.

October 12
Friday
October 13
Saturday
Aunt Maude has been away again - seems that Grandma had stayed at their house.  I suspect she didn't have much time for the diary.

October 14

October 18
Thursday.  Edna’s birthday – all of us wired red roses to go to the cemetery.  Cleaned up at church Kitchen and sent out laundry.  Four P.M. had shampoo and set.
Aunt Edna was buried in Miami, Oklahoma - she had died in June, noted earlier.  When I was a child, they had lived right down the street from Aunt Minnie and Uncle Ira - but in the early 1950's they sold the drug store in Van Buren and moved to Miami.

October 19
Friday.   A.M. drove to Springdale to stay with K.M. & LaVonne’s children.  K.M., LaVonne, Joe and JoEllen left for K.C. to spend the weekend with Becky & Ike.  Graydon & Clare too.

October 20
Saturday.  Looked after the children.  Baked a pie, and got things ready for Sunday.  Went to JoEllen’s in afternoon.  Laurie Lee was thrilled to see me.  She was missing her mother.
I suspect my little sisters had been left with me and Mammaw was looking in on us.

October 21
Sunday.  A.M.  Took the children and sent to S.S. and church.  Fixed dinner and Kay came in afternoon to get a piece of pie.  K.M. & LaVonne came in form KC about nine thirty.

October 22

October 23
Tuesday.  Put out washing and baked two apple pies to feed the men who painted at church in evening.
Wish you could watch Mammaw prepare a pie - she could turn out a perfect pie crust circle with about six slaps of a rolling pin.  And it never tore when she moved it to the pie plate.  And so delicious!

September 1956

September 1
Saturday.  Still canning apples while JoEllen painted cabinets in Kitchen & Utility room.
August ended with their drive to Springdale.

September 2
Sunday.  Went to church with JoEllen while Joe went preacher hunting.  Saw K.M. and LaVonne’s new bed room furniture.  Mary Jane was flower girl at a wedding.  Also Denney family visiting with them.
LaVonne was a Denney - wedding was probably in their family.

September 3
Monday.  K.M.’s birthday.  Didn’t see much of him or the family.  They still had company.  Canning and painting still going on.
K.M. was 42 this day.

September 4
Tuesday.  We left for home early.  Stopped in Fayetteville to see A. D. McCallister about taxes on farm.  Arrived home at noon and went to group 2 meeting at Kate Browns.
Settling up on the farm they had sold out at Elkins.

September 5
Wednesday.  Washed machine of clothes.  Took Nora grocery shopping.  Attended garden club dinner on Leola’s patio in the evening.

September 6
Thursday.  Made five calls with Susan Swinburn.  Paul was one of them.  Pus on kidneys – ordered to bed for ten days.
Church calls, I'm sure.  Paul - my granddad's brother.

September 7
Friday.  A.M.  Had a long with the minister (Robert Brown) in his Study.  P.M.  CWF Executive Board meeting at church.

September 8
Saturday.  Did yard work.  Went to Lullaby Shop and got coverals for Laurie Lee.  Yes, I actually drew a lucky number.  Cooked apples for pies.  Cleaned house.  Played pitch.
Wonder if she won a drawing at the children's shop?

September 9
Sunday.  A.M.  S.S. and church.  We took Nora and Grandma to see Paul.  Church at night.

September 10
Monday.  Washed and cooked apples.  JoEllen and Joe brought JoAnn & Laurie Lee to us while they go to Little Rock.
I must have stayed with friends.  Probably could not miss school.

September 11
Tuesday.  Baked pie & made salad for CWF luncheon.  Maude stayed with “Annie” and Laurie.  Had a real interesting meeting.  Grace Mills visited.

September 12
Wednesday.  Spent most of the day fooling with the Kids.  A limb broke telephone line.  Evening ironed and watched TV.

September 13
Thursday.  A.M. did a washing.  Telephone repair man here till noon.  Jo and Joe came about four and took the little Kids home.  We miss them.

September 14
Friday.  A.M. went Shopping.  Making plans for Ira & Neva’s birthday party Sunday.  Cleaned house and canned apples.  P.M. visited with Grace.

September 15
Saturday.  Cleaned house and iced Minnie’s cake for the party.  P.M.  Had my hair shampooed and set.  Ocie Bruns died.
I believe the cake was actually for Ira - Minnie was baking it for him.  His birthday was September 10th - he was 64, but he's having a joint party with Neva.

September 16
Sunday.  A.M.  S.S. & church.  P.M. went to Carney’s for Neva and Ira’s birthday party on the new patio.  Shuffle Board is fun.  Lester was with us.  He is a good sport, but so lonely.  We spent the night with K.M. and LaVonne.
Carney's lived in Fayetteville.  Uncle Lester was my granddad's brother-in-law, husband of Edna who had died in June.

September 17
Monday.  Picked Nora, Maude & Grandma up at Letty’s and drove home by noon.  Attended Ocie Bruns funeral at Two P.M.  Group 2 served the bereavement dinner.

September 18

September 24
Monday.  Beck & Ike went to work.  The four of us shopped all day in Mission and in Kan City, MO.  Called on H.D. Lee Co.
I suspect this company was one of the vendors that Uncle Ira did business with for his department store in Van Buren.

September 25
Tuesday.  Ira & Minnie drove back home and left us for a week’s visit.  Helped Ike put out shrubs after working hours.

September 26
Wednesday.  Kenney and I kept house and looked after Lindy, the dog.  I did some embroidery work – mixer cover, toaster cover, and pot holder.
Who could forget Lindy!  She was a cocker spaniel and Becky & Ike's "baby".  I remember that Becky put diapers on her when they were potty-training her.  Something must have worked.

September 27
Thursday.  Wrote a long letter to Jay.  Lined bedroom curtains.  Quite a job since curtains were already made and put up.  Made banana nut bread.

August 5
Sunday.  Went to S.S. & church without Kenney.  Took Grandma, Maude and Nora to see Paul & Neva’s house, P.M.

August 6
Monday.  Looked for Becky and Ike all P.M.  Came about nine.  Last half of his vacation.
No matter where they were going, Aunt Becky & Uncle Ikey were always, always late....

August 7
Tuesday.  Becky went with me to Circle meeting at Nora’s.  Kenney and Ike came later.  Had watermelon on Paul and Neva’s patio – evening.

August 8
Wednesday.  Dropped cocoanut pie upside down.  Disgusting.  Baked another one.
Coconut cream pie was Ike’s favorite – she always baked it for him.

August 9
Thursday.  A.M.  JoEllen and girls came.  On way back we went with them to see Paul and Neva’s house.
Probably just JoAnn and Laurie were with Mother.  Don't remember Paul & Neva having a new house until they bought the house Mammaw & Kenney were living in then.

August 10
Friday.  Marked and dated pictures.  Becky and Ike made plans for re-doing Kitchen.  Also living and dining rooms.
Becky and Ike always had re-doing plans....

August 11
Saturday.  Went with Becky & Ike to see Sam.  Then drove around.  They left 9:30 P.M. for Springdale – then home Sunday.
Sam was the Black janitor for Comstock, Inc. for many years – he was a faithful worker and much loved by all the family.  Ike had worked in the store with Uncle Ira for a few years after the War.

August 12
Sunday.   S. S. and church – Lunch with Ira and Minnie.  Late P.M. went with Doc and Grace to peach orchard.  Got 3 ½ bushels.

August 13
Monday.  Canned and froze peaches all day.  Watched Democratic Convention in the evening.

August 14.
Tuesday.  Baked cookies and took them to CWF meeting at Ruth Huckelbury’s 9 A.M.  Voted and then drove to Springdale.

August 15
Wednesday.  Went to see Dr. Applegate.  Got fine report.  Kay went too.  P.M. watched Jo and Joe’s building project.  Went with JoEllen to grocery store.
Follow up visit after her surgery.  I probably drove her there.

August 16
Thursday.  Drove by farm and on home in time for lunch.  Terribly hot.  Watched Democratic Convention on TV.  Evening – Doc & Grace watched with us.
They must have driven out past the farm they lived in for awhile at Elkins before going on to Van Buren - that farm was really sort of their "dream" home until Kenney had his stroke and they could no longer manage there.  I loved that farm more than any other place they ever lived - makes me sad to think of them driving by.

-----------------------------------------------------------
My Digression.
The farm that Mammaw and Kenney bought near Elkins, east of Fayetteville, had a white frame two-story white house with square columns in front, and also had on the main road an old brick store building which served as a chicken house, as well as the usual barn and ordinary chicken houses.  They raised laying hens and sold the eggs to a hatchery and also had cattle and two ponds.  There were two pair of Mallard ducks on the ponds.  Jay lived with them for awhile but became restless and moved back to San Francisco.  In the summer I would spend every possible day on that farm helping with the chores and exploring.  I was eleven the summer Kenney had his stroke and I was the only other person who knew how and what to feed the chickens, and how to get the eggs ready for the hatchery. Kenney was critical at first and all the family was staying at the hospital - except for me.  I stayed on the farm alone - except Dad would come out, arriving after dark, and stay at night - and I took care of about 300 chickens, feeding twice a day, gathering and candling and sorting the eggs (putting each one on a light stand to see if it was fertile - those that were not were for ours for eating). The hatchery picked up the eggs daily, but could not immediately make arrangements to pick up the chickens.  Took me almost all waking hours, but I did a lot of growing-up in those three days.  I remember Dad asking me if I knew exactly how to manage and I assured him I did.  I was so proud of being able to help my family.  I wonder if there is any eleven-year-old today that could do that, or a parent that would even let them try - children are guarded so carefully now and not really considered capable of functioning on an adult level.
----------------------------------------------------------

August 17
Friday.  Went to grocery store and stopped by the parsonage to leave poster material with Wilma.  Evening – Watched Convention on Ira and Minnie’s brand new Admiral TV.

August 18
Saturday.  Did a lot of early baking.  Trying to beat the heat – also washed a machine of clothes.

August 19

Monday.  Finished my set of tea towels.  Did lots of telephoning for ice cream social.  Cooked apples for pies.

August 28
Tuesday.  Baked pies.  Went to beauty shop.  Evening – Ice cream social on City Hall lawn.  Cleared approximately $50.00.

August 29
Wednesday.  Visited with Jimmy, Joyce, and Maude.  Brought Grandma home with us so they could get an early start to Bristow.
Jimmy and Joyce were Aunt Maude's grandchildren that lived in Bristow - they must have been visiting.  Any time Aunt Maude needed a break from taking care of her mother - it was my Mammaw that stepped in, rather than any of Grandma Comstock's other daughters.

August 30
Thursday.  The usual housework and kept Grandma another day and night.  Ira & Minnie came to visit with her and to watch TV.

August 31
Friday.  Took Grandma to Nora & we drove on to Springdale to help JoEllen can apples.
As if she had not done enough of her own preserving of the summer bounty - now she's come to help my Mom!  I'm sure the apples became jelly and apple butter!  We probably got a pie or two out of those apples as well - what Mammaw & Mom called "Upside down apple pie" and was really like a Dutch Apple Pie with streusel on top instead of a top crust.

July 1956

July 1
Sunday.  Much better today.  Can sit without too many pillows.  All went to church except Kenney, Laurie and myself.  Laurie slept.  I helped a little with lunch.
She was staying at the McKim's house in Springdale while recuperating.

July 2
Monday.  Had two sitz baths and wrote some thank you notes.  P.M.  Not quite so perky.  Too much tea I think.  Rodeo going on here.

July 3
Tuesday.  Laurie Lee and I stayed home while the family went to rodeo.  Pam Backus baby sat.  Stayed up till eleven.
Pam was the daughter of JoEllen & Joe's friends Howard & Lorraine Backus.  Kay babysat Pam and her brothers when they were younger - now Pam's babysitting Laurie.

July 4
Wednesday.  Jay Called.  Went to store and watched parade.  Paul and Neva came.  At supper on patio.  Had homemade cream.  Backus family came.  Had fire works at night.
Paul Comstock - my granddad's brother - and Neva his wife.

July 5
Thursday.  Work on bath room started again.  Martha Summers and Lucille came.  Went with JoEllen to pool to pick up Kay and JoAnn.  Kay broke glasses.
Maybe that's the summer I broke my glasses three times - Mom was not happy.  This was the first summer Springdale had a pool!   One day the chlorine tank valve popped open and sprayed the pool with chlorine gas making everyone cough and many quite ill.  I remember carrying JoAnn home that day - she was coughing and gagging but since she had been in the baby pool at the opposite end, she wasn't terribly ill.  I had held my breath and carried her out of the pool area as quickly as I could.  There was so much confusion at the pool, ambulances arriving, etc. that I just thought it best to get her home.  Dr. Applegate checked her out and she was fine.  If I had not had her with me, I'd probably have been at the diving pool and been really ill.

July 6
Friday.  Carpenter finished bath room shelves.  Mrs. Bridenthal came to clean house.  Seems to be working out O.K.  Went with JoEllen to take her home.
Mom had several ladies come to clean during the years - don't think any of them lasted very long.

July 7

Monday.  Late breakfast at K.M.’s.  Packed ready to come home.   Lunch with JoEllen.  Drove by Mrs. Burlesons – then short visit with Letty.  Home 6 P.M.  Ice cream with Farmers and Croftons.
Mrs. Burleson was Clare Comstock's mother - she lived in Fayetteville across the street from Washington Grade School.  Letty was Letty Carney - wife of Cy Carney and my granddad's sister - they lived on Highway 71 just south of Fayetteville so they would be driving right by her house on the way to Van Buren.

July 10
Tuesday.  Unpacking & watering all day.  Automatic washer repair man.  Lunch with Ira and Minnie.  CWF day but I rested.  Birthday card to Dave and mailed pants to Jay – Late for birthday.
Grandson Dave Comstock's birthday is July 11th - her son Jay's was July 17th - maybe she was afraid her package would not arrive in San Francisco in time.

July 11
Wednesday.  A.W. spent the morning with us.  Had a good visit.  P.M. went to Grandma’s, Nora’s, and to see Paul and Neva’s new home.  Dave’s birthday – very nice.
A. W. was probably her brother, Arthur Wallace Hays, as he often went by his initials.

July 12
Thursday.  Put out three washings.  Two for Minnie.  Minnie and I packed boxes cookies & nuts for Jay.  Wrote Insurance people again.  Wrote Jay and JoEllen.

July 13
Friday.  Kenney’s birthday.  Didn’t do anything about it.  Waiting for the party.

July 16
Monday.  A lazy day.  Cloudy and a little sprinkle of rain.  Cleaned bed rooms and got beds ready for company.  Kenney got book from Jay and Scotty.

July 17
Tuesday.  Jay’s birthday.  Went to Circle #1 nine o’clock coffee at Emma Mae Rogers.  Nice meeting.  Doc brought gallon of plums for jelly and butter.
Doc Farmer - friend and neighbor who lived across the back alley.

July 18
Wednesday.  Help Minnie getting beds ready for big Eastern Star company.  Birthday party at Nora’s for Maude, Letty, and Kenney.  Too much food.
Kenney's birthday was as above - July 13th, his sister Maude's was June 19th, and his sister Letty's was July 26th.

July 19
Thursday.  K.M. worked store and had lunch with us.  LaVonne on the way to St. Louis with Letty & Cy.  K.M. said good by till in August.  Leaving for Camp Hood for two weeks.

July 24
Tuesday.  Started home about 9 A.M.  Stopped by for an hour’s visit with Letty.  They were back from St. Louis and had good report from Cy’s doctor.

July 25
Wednesday.  Clare called.  Graydon would be in Okla City the week end; so took Nora to Muskogee and we arrived in Tulsa six P.M.  Just in time for dinner.

July 26
Thursday.  Nadine came for hamburgers with us.  She’s a wonderful person.  Had good visit.  P.M. Graydon took us and the boys to see “Oklahoma”.  A very good show.
Nadine (Riggs) Yarrington was one of my mother's high school friends - her family lived in Tulsa.

July 27
Friday.  We left for home 9:30 A.M.  Drove into state park & Western Hills Lodge near Wagoner.  Had lunch in Tahlequah.  Home 2:30 P.M.  Had watermelon fee on Paul and Neva's patio.  Joyce birthday party.
